Origin of Name:
The Ainu people are indigenous to Asia, with a significant population is in Japan and Russia. For the Ainu, the worlds of spirit and matter exist in parallel. The Ainu believe that life force is in all things and able to travel between both worlds. "Ainu" means "human."

Origin of Name:
The principal historic seat of this tribe was on the upper course of the Alabama River. The Alabama population was less than 1,000 in 1704; after 1763 they were dispersed, joining the Seminoles and Creeks and also going to Texas with the Koasatis. By 1910, there were only about 300 more Alabama Indians among the Creeks.

Origin of Name:
Mostly wanderers, the Apaches have roamed as marauders over portions of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and several of the northern provinces of Mexico. Various Apache tribes offered strong resistance to encroachment on their territory in the latter half of the 19th century. Populations now are located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Origin of Name:
Meaning “our people”, the Arapaho lived on the plains of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas since the 1600s. They were an agricultural people, living in permanent villages in the eastern woodlands. Before moving west they became a nomadic people following the great buffalo herds. They lived in teepees made from buffalo skins that could be easily erected and taken down as the tribe moved from place to place.

For the Aztec, life was a constant struggle of hard work having to please the gods in order to keep the universe in balance. The temples are one of the few remaining signs of the Aztecs. The Aztec civilization has been credited for many advances of the Mesoamerican cultures, including the development of two unique calendar systems, a complex mathematical system and an intriguing form of astronomy.

Origin of Name:
The Biloxi Indians were Siouan speakers who were first recorded living near present Biloxi, in southern Mississippi. Amounting to perhaps 1,000 people in 1650, the Biloxi spoke a language belonging to the Siouan family. By the end of the 19th century there were very few identifiable survivors, in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and eastern Texas.

Due to its somewhat secluded location and sparse population, Canarsie was at times a meeting place for pirates and smugglers. The word Canarsie means "fence" or "fort." The tribes’ territory extended over most of Kings County and parts of Jamaica, New York City.

Origin of Name:
The Caribe formerly inhabited the northern coast of South America and made their way to the islands. They came in contact with Spanish explorers in many islands of the West Indies. The Caribes practiced cannibalism and were warlike when first discovered, and the Spaniards subjugated them as slaves. Only a few thousand descendants remain today.

Origin of Name:
The Cherokee were the largest Southeastern tribe from the 18th century. Some survive in their Appalachian homeland in Western North Carolina, while most today live in Oklahoma. During the American Revolution the Cherokees supported the British and made several attacks on forts and settlements in the frontier. After 1800 the Cherokees profoundly adopted white culture.

Origin of Name:
Between 1200 and 1535 AD, the Inca population lived in the part of South America extending from the Equator to the Pacific coast of Chile. The beginning of the Inca rule started with the conquest of the Moche Culture in Peru. They were warriors with a strong and powerful army. Because of the fierceness and their hierarchical organization, they became the largest Native American society. The height of their reign in the 15th century came to a brutal end in 1535 when the Spanish conquistadors took over their territory.

Origin of Name:
Known as “The League of Peace and Power”, the Iroquois were an extraordinarily well-organized federation of Indian states which was located in New York, Pennsylvania, Ontario and Quebec. The Iroquois were not a single tribe, but were comprised of the five nations: Oneida, Onodaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Mohawk. In 1720, Tuscarora became the sixth confederation of the league. These nations dwelled close together and formed political ties with allies. Lacrosse was a game invented by the Iroquois people.

Algonquian-speaking Indians, related to the Sauk and Fox, Kickapoo were first reported by Europeans in the late 17th century. They lived at the portage between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers. They were known as formidable warriors, whose raids took them over a wide territory, ranging as far as and throughout Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Mexico, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Origin of Name:
In 1626, the Dutch purchased Manhattan Island for sixty guilders (the equivalent of $23.70) from the Canarsie Indians. The land, however, was actually owned by the Wappinger’s who never contested the deal between the Dutch and the Canarsies. Manhattan is an area now worth over $60 billion. The original town, named New Amsterdam, had a population of 270, and was complete with forts, homes, farms and government buildings on the tip of Lower Manhattan.

The Miami originally lived in Indiana, Illinois, and southern Michigan at the time of European arrival. They moved into the Maumee Valley around 1700 and soon became the most powerful Indian tribe in Ohio. They gave up their Ohio lands by the Treaty of Greenville (1795). In 1840 most of the tribe went to Kansas and Oklahoma. Today, about 4,200 live in Oklahoma and Indiana.

Mohawk Indians were one of the five Indian nations that comprised the Iroquois. They lived in New York State and many settled in Canada. They were known as “possessors of the flint”. Origin of Name:
The Mohegan’s settled in upstate New York, and then migrated to Connecticut. The Mohegan tribe is an Algonquian-speaking tribe living in eastern (upper Thames valley) Connecticut that was jointly ruled by the Pequot tribe until 1637. The tribe gained federal recognition in 1994. Currently there are about 1,700 Tribal members.

Origin of Name:
The Nanticoke were known as People of the Tide Water. They originally occupied the area between the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays, in what is today Maryland and Delaware. In 1608, they were involved in the production of marine shell beads, which they used to trade for furs, copper, and other commodities throughout the Chesapeake Bay drainage basin.

Origin of Name:
The Navajo is one of the largest tribes in the U.S. Their homelands are now northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, southeastern Utah, and southwestern Colorado. Their name means “The People.” They are closely related to the Apache and emigrated from western Canada and settled in the Southwest sometime between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Origin of Name:
Ottawa is derived from the Algonquian word adawe, meaning "to trade" or "to buy and sell." They had an active trading relationship with the Chippewa and Potawatomi, as well as others in the region. There are about 15,000 citizens of Ottawa Indian bands in Michigan, Ontario, and Oklahoma today.

Origin of Name:
The M/V ROCKAWAY BELLE vessel was officially named by its sponsor, Mrs. Elaine Royce, in honor of the brave men and women from Rockaway Beach, New York City, who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The newbuild vessel delivered to TBS in September 2009 and sails the seas with pride in her name. At the time of its discovery in 1609, Rockaway was known as Reckowacky, which meant "the place of our own people", a name that literally was interpreted from "neck of the land". It was provided by a small tribe of Canarsie Indians who inhabited this area. The name was given simply to differentiate it from other Indian villages which were all a part of the Mohawk Indian nation. Reckowacky has also been translated to mean "lonely place", or "place of waters bright".

Origin of Name:
A wandering tribe called the Savannah Indians, armed by a group of Carolinians, drove out the Westos in the Westo War of 1680 and gave their name to the river. All through the period of the French and Indian war, the "Savannahs" were constantly making progress on the Carolina frontier. They are described as "northern savages" and friends of the Cherokee, and are undoubtedly the Shawnee.

Origin of Name:
The Seminole people are the descendents of the Creek people native to Florida and can be traced back at least 12,000 years. The term "Seminole" means "wild men" in Spanish. The Creeks claimed them as a part of their nation, and included them in a treaty with the U.S. in 1790; but the Seminoles repudiated it and made war upon the Americans, and affiliated with the Spaniards in 1793.
